Description
This is a late 18th century steading arranged in a U-plan. Originally part of a courtyard layout, the northern range has been demolished and replaced with a modern shed. The steading is two storeys high with a single-storey and attic wing to the northwest. The exterior is of painted rubble with regular window openings.
The southern range includes stables with ten sturdy timber stalls on the ground floor, centrally located, and to the west, three segmental cart arches. To the east is a threshing barn, of which only part of the drive shaft remains, with grain storage above. The first floor of this range, except for the east end, historically provided living accommodation, accessed via external stairs in the north wall. The exterior reflects this arrangement with three cart arches to the west and, centrally and to the east, a door flanked by sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing. The first floor has smaller 12-pane sashes, with those to the east flanking a loft door. Two tall, coped wallhead stacks, with granite angles, are centrally located, and the roof is of graded piended slate.
The western block is single storey and attic, with the original loft door removed; access is now via the courtyard. The eastern block features some blocked openings, likely relating to a previous threshing machine, and a widened door to the north. All sections are roofed with slate.
The steading has group value with Cally Mains Farmhouse and Cally Mains Hay Barn. The demolished northern range previously contained byres; to the north of this, a surviving range of calf sheds exists, but is not included in the listing.
