Description
The Cally Bathhouse and Cistern, located on the Cally Estate beside a stream in woodland to the east of the walled garden at Cally Palace Hotel, is a rustic structure likely dating to the early 19th century or possibly the late 18th century. It is constructed of mixed stone rubble. The northeast elevation features an entrance with a rough tooled ashlar doorway and cast iron pins that once held a door or iron grille, which has since been removed. The roof and sides of the building are covered with piled earth and turf.
Inside, the bathhouse consists of a single room measuring approximately 2 by 3 metres, with a barrel vaulted ceiling made of red brick. The room contains a sunken, lead-lined bath that measures 180 by 90 centimetres and is 67 centimetres deep. Water flows continuously into the bath from a below-ground cistern or settling tank located to the east (rear) of the building, entering through an overflow pipe. There are two outlet pipes on the downhill side of the bath, one positioned above the other. The lower pipe connects to a below-ground stopcock valve to the west. The pipework is mainly made of cast iron, with some sections of lead.
