Description
Cross Cottage is a largely 19th-century rebuild of a likely early 18th-century structure, incorporating some original 18th-century moulded stonework. It originally served as a chapel for Cally House. The building is a small, rectangular rubble structure, single-storey with an attic, now used as a dwelling.
The south elevation features a basket-arched doorway with roll-moulded stonework, some of which is later 19th century, and includes a modern door. To the right is a lancet window, enlarged recently to tripartite form with concrete jambs, originally featuring moulded ashlar jambs.
The north elevation is painted and has two rectangular windows with roll-moulding, again combining 18th-century and 19th-century materials. All openings have modern glazing. The larger window on the north side has Y-tracery. The west gable displays stepped sandstone skews with scroll skewputts, all appearing to be 19th-century, and a cross finial tops the apex. The east gable has a coped rendered stack, possibly a modern addition. The roof is steeply pitched and slate-covered, with a single-storey lean-to on the east side.
A comparable, though less altered, private chapel is located at Cardonness House, Anwoth Parish. Cross Cottage is part of the Cally Estate B Group.
