Durham House, Kirkpatrick Durham

Durham House is an 1838 L-plan manse, designed by Mr Callander of Dumfries, with later 19th-century alterations. The symmetrical south frontage has three bays and two storeys. It is built in ashlar with red sandstone margins and quoins. A pilastered doorpiece features a recessed fanlight and panelled door. The ground floor has tripartite windows, corniced with stone mullions. Above, the first-floor windows are single-light sash and case windows with lying pane glazing. An eaves band and moulded cornice run along the top of the building. The roof is covered in concrete tiles, with corniced axial stacks. A projecting gabled wing extends to the east, with two storeys. This wing is constructed of rubble, with mainly 12-pane sashes. Within a walled courtyard, there are separately owned, unlisted L-plan outbuildings that were converted to domestic use in the 1980s, and which now contain many new window and door openings.
