Description
Dalswinton Mill is a cornmill dating to the mid to late 18th century, with additions made in the early to mid 19th century. It is situated on the sloping south bank of the Pennyland Burn. The mill is two and a half storeys high, with basements and lofts. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, all whitewashed.
The building comprises two adjoining rectangular blocks arranged in a joggled plan. The main north block has two lower wings to the west – the larger wing featuring a gabled, piended low addition in the re-entrant angle with a later inserted entrance door positioned above the slope. An iron breast wheel, dated 1893, is set into the piended north wall, above a single window. The south block, which appears to have been raised in height in the mid 19th century, has a central two-leaf boarded door on its south gable. Broken millstones form steps leading up to this entrance. The roof is covered with graded slates.
Internally, some original machinery and gearing remains. The mill wheel is inscribed with "T Turnbull, Castlepark Mill Dumfries" and bears a date. A substantial dam is located to the west of the mill.
