Description

Dalswinton House Dam is likely to have been built around 1785 for Patrick Miller of Dalswinton, a notable figure in the early development of steam navigation. It is a small, straight dam located at the southeastern end of Dalswinton Loch. The dam is constructed of rubble with red ashlar dressings and coping along the top. Patrick Miller conducted successful experiments with the world's first steam-powered boat on Dalswinton Loch in 1788, and the dam was probably built to facilitate greater scope for these experiments.
