Description
This is a late 18th-century stable block, significantly altered through the 20th century and now largely converted for domestic use. It was designed symmetrically around a rectangular courtyard, which is paved with cobblestones, and features a clock tower above the entrance.
The building is a single storey with a loft or upper floor, constructed from red sandstone ashlar. The clock tower has an irregular octagonal shape set upon a square base. It features a fluted frieze decorated with rosettes and a later 19th-century roof with a steep facetted form, iron brattishing (decorative ironwork), and a weathervane.
The north elevation is articulated with projecting central and outer bays. A depressed-arched pend (carriage way) forms the central opening. A garage opening and a modern window have replaced two original depressed-arched cart openings on the left side, with three additional bays added to the left. The right bay contains two round-headed windows, and the bays in between have single round-headed windows. The main cornice is interrupted by three inserted upper-floor windows, two of which are modern dormers, along with a blocking course. Apex stacks rise from the roof, which is piended (hipped) and covered in graded slates.
The pend below the tower is vaulted. The interior of the courtyard is limewashed with painted margins. A variety of openings are present, including three blocked, arcaded, depressed-arched cart openings on the north range. Simple vaulting is found in the pend below the tower.
The stables are shown on a print published in 1796; a copy of this print is held in the Ewart Library in Dumfries.
