Description
The Smithy in Shotts, Closeburn, is an 18th-century building that was altered and heightened in the 19th century. It is a single-storey structure with five bays and a stone-slab roof. The interior is complete, featuring windows in alternate bays with multi-paned glazing. The entrance door retains its original dressings, while the windows have been enlarged and feature stugged ashlar dressings, along with a wide vehicle doorway. The exterior is finished in whitewashed rubble with ashlar dressings. The main roof sweeps over a wide rear outshot, which includes a stack base, axial ventilators, and a single end stack. There is also a modern addition to the north gable.
