Description
Knocknalling House is an earlier to mid-19th century country house exhibiting restrained Tudor Gothic detailing. It is constructed of squared rubble walling with squared quoins, and polished red sandstone dressings. The South elevation is five bays, with prominent, ball-finialled, gabled end bays projecting forward. The windows are bipartite, featuring four-centred arches under squared hoodmoulds. A doorway has been created from a window in the inner left bay, leading to double-leaf doors. Sash windows with a two-pane plate glass glazing pattern are consistent throughout, except for some ground floor windows in the West elevation which have twelve panes. First-floor windows on the South elevation break the eaves line, with triangular, ball-finialled gablets and a squared 'gablet' head over the centre bay.
The East elevation is asymmetrical, with a single-storey, gabled, entrance porch to the right. The windows mirror those of the South elevation. The West elevation features three bays, with a single-storey, projecting, square bay to the centre, topped with a parapet and ball finials. First-floor windows are set in square-headed dormers. Adjoining to the North is a three-bay, lower, kitchen wing with a piended roof.
To the North of the main house is a lower, two-storey, irregular elevation, incorporating some single-storey buildings grouped around a small, partially flagged service court. This court is enclosed by a coped rubble wall with ball finials and a bronze statue of Herakles in the ‘al antica’ style. The house has axial and wallhead groupings of tall diamond stacks and slate roofs.
To the North, a large walled garden is set on a sloping site and is enclosed by a coped, stepped rubble wall with numerous ball finials. Knocknalling House is part of a group listing that includes Knocknalling Barn and Stableyard.
