Description
Probably constructed in the mid-19th century, Knocknalling Barn is a rectangular hay and winnowing barn of very fine quality. The barn is characterised by regularly spaced triangular vents throughout its bay rows, with rubble walling accentuated by squared quoins, and thick slates used to form the vents. The roof is slate. The southern portion of the barn has been built upon the foundations of an earlier building.
Depressed-arch, rough-voussoired openings are present near the full height of the east and west walls, with the western opening now blocked. Pointed-arch dovecot openings with timber doors are found in the gable walls, with the southern gable featuring a dovecot having four flight holes.
Knocknalling barn is notable for the generous provision of triangular ventilators on all sides, a rare feature in comparable examples. It is part of a group of listed buildings which includes Knocknalling House and the Knocknalling Stableyard.
