Description
Barskeoch Mains Farmsteading is a building of probable 18th-century origin, originally a single-storey cottage that was later raised and incorporated into a two-storey farmhouse dating to the early 19th century. Some reused window jambs, in a style characteristic of the 16th and 17th centuries, appear in the first-floor windows.
The front facade is wide and composed of three bays of painted rubble masonry. A 20th-century gabled porch of brick is positioned off-centre. Three evenly spaced four-pane sash and case windows are present on each floor, with a small additional window on the ground floor to the left. The upper-floor windows feature some reused dressings, including roll-moulded cills and checked back jambs.
The rear elevation is harled and has four-pane sash and case windows. The roof is slate-covered, with flat skews and a sandstone ridge. The end stacks are coped and topped with mainly octagonal cans.
Local tradition suggests that a tower house once stood near the site, and that cut stones from this structure were used in the construction of Barskeoch Mains. The site of Old Barskeoch Castle is not documented in the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments for Scotland (RCAHMS) inventories.
