Description
Waulk Mill, located in Cumloden, Minnigaff, Newton Stewart, dates from around 1800 and is a three-storey former waulk-mill that was converted to residential use around 1971. The building is constructed from whinstone rubble, with granite quoins and rybats.
The entrance elevation features a four-bay layout (2-1-1) with a stone forestair and iron balustrade leading to a door at the first floor, positioned in the bay to the right of the center. The fenestration is regularly arranged, except for the ground floor in the left bay, which has larger windows at the first floor.
On the west elevation facing Penkiln Burn, there are five bays with near-regular fenestration at the ground and first floors. Later openings are located lower in the center bay, as well as in the bays to the right of center and the outer left bay at the second floor. There is a blocked mill race to the right, and the building is adjoined to Queen Mary's Bridge to the southwest.
The south elevation has a window at the first and second floors in the center. The north elevation features a lean-to former dye-house that has been raised from a single storey and altered, slightly canted to the right. It includes a door to the left, a garage door to the right, and a small window to the right of center.
The building showcases a variety of small-pane glazing, predominantly 12-pane glazing in sash and case windows. It has coped skews, a granite stack on the north side, and a roof covered with grey slates.
Inside, the basement preserves a timber and cast-iron overshot water-wheel, along with its gearing and trough. There are also two cast-iron dyeing vats located in the dye-house. Additionally, the rubble remains of an earlier waulk mill can be found to the north.
