Description
Corsewall House is a late 18th-century mansion house, with additions and alterations from the 19th century and a major extension in 1905. Originally a double-pile classical house, it has been reduced to a T-plan layout. The main body of the house is two storeys high, with a lower wing to the west and the 1905 addition set at an oblique angle to the northeast. The exterior is dry-dashed, with the west wing rendered and lined. The principal south elevation features three bays, with a piend-roofed single bay projection at the centre, slightly raised and advanced from the original facade. This projection includes a portico with Tuscan columns and a full entablature, which was re-sited from elsewhere in the original house, and a pilastered doorpiece with a tripartite fanlight containing small-pane glazing. A window sits above the doorpiece on the first floor, with a band course marking the floor level. Sash and case windows are present throughout, mainly with plate glass glazing, although some retain 12-pane designs. The east elevation has three windows at ground floor and two above. The lower, two-storey west wing has four bays, with the two central bays recessed. A door is located in the bay to the right of centre, and the regular fenestration continues to the left return of the advanced right bay. A left bay is open to the rear, lacking glazing or a door, and is retained as a curtain wall for symmetry. The northeast wing features a pedimented bay with a moulded panel inscribed "DWCB 1905," and a two-storey modern addition at the centre with various irregular openings. The southeast elevation displays a pedimented bay advanced to the right, and a window to the left and right at ground floor, with paired windows at the centre of the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slates, some graded, and topped with two ridge stacks on the main house's roof, and a tall ridge stack on the northeast wing, all with octagonal cans. Internally, the house boasts fine plasterwork in the vestibule and top-lit stairwell, including classical relief panels. Corsewall House is currently in use as a residential home. Further structures associated with the estate are listed separately. Historical references include accounts from 1845, 1870, and 1965.
