Description
Glenluiart is a mansion house dating from 1900, designed by West Nave of London in the Arts and Crafts style and built for Mrs Monteith. James Barbour was the supervising architect. The building is constructed of rubble with red ashlar dressings. It has an asymmetrical design with three and two-thirds storeys over a raised basement.
The south elevation features an off-centre doorway at basement level, with shallow sidelights and a flat canopy. To the left of the doorway are windows. A tall, mullioned and transomed window extends to the eaves, and there is a wide dormer in the roof. Outer gables, one crow-stepped, face the elevation, alongside a four-light window to the right and wide, canted windows with a parapet below an attic window to the left. Gabled and piended slate roofs are set at varying levels.
The east elevation has a two-storey, wide canted window below a wide, mullioned window; the roof above is piended and sweeps over the eaves. A tall stack rises from a stepped, full-height projecting base on the west elevation, with coped stacks throughout. A low courtyard lies to the north, with a gabled projection supported by two columns above the rear door.
The interior includes decorative wood panelling. A foundation stone beside the doorway is inscribed "EMM 1900" and rainwater heads are dated 1901. Original plans show a red tile roof. Drawings dated 1899 are held by Sutherland, Dickie & Copeland of Dumfries, with copies at the National Records of Scotland.
