Description

The Castlewigg Hotel, built around 1840-1845, is a two-storey, three-bay house with single-storey wings on either side. The structure is made of rubble with polished, painted red sandstone used for the angles and window margins. The west front features a central two-storey main block that has dormer-headed windows on the first floor. To the north, there is an L-shaped single-storey wing with a gable facing east, and to the south, a single-storey wing that connects to a rectangular block with a single storey and attic to the southwest.

The main block includes a central single-storey porch with a piend roof, and the ground floor windows have hood moulds. There are three gablet dormer-headed windows that break through the eaves. Most of the windows are sash and case with 10-pane glazing, although three first-floor windows are modern uPVC with mock astragals. The building features coped end stacks with octagonal cans and timber-bracketed overhanging eaves. The north wing has bipartite hoodmoulded windows and a doorway with a modern door at the re-entrant angle, possibly serving as a farm office. The south wing contains a bipartite window, while the southeast block has a gable with three windows facing east, including a central hoodmoulded window. The south elevation has three bays with modern flat-roofed dormers on the first floor.

To the west, there is a two-storey rear wing attached to the central block. The ground floor features sash and case windows with small-pane glazing, while the first floor has modern uPVC windows. The building is topped with good graded slate roofs.
