Description
Whithorn Parish Church, built in 1822 with a later 19th century tower, is a simple rectangular hall church featuring a squat three-stage tower. The body of the church is harled with raised angles and window margins, while the tower is constructed of rubble with polished red sandstone dressings. The church has a three-bay nave with lancet windows and horizontal glazing. There are two east windows with stained glass, which were gifted by the daughter of Gemmel Hutcheson RSA in memory of her father. The tower is flanked by lean-to bays at the ground level and has a simple pointed-arch entrance, accompanied by single diminutive lancets that are all linked under a hoodmould. The belfry has louvred lancets, a string course separates the floors, and there is a deep cornice with a blocking course. To the north of the single bay, there is a two-storey boilerhouse and vestry, featuring a first-floor window and a ground-level door. The eastern side is gabled with a stack, while the western side has a piend roof, connecting the lower block with a stone forestair.
Inside, the church is galleried on three sides, with the galleries supported by cast-iron columns. There is a well-crafted free-standing carved oak pulpit and a classically detailed Communion Table.
The graveyard surrounding the church is enclosed by a rubble wall and contains many notable 18th and 19th century gravestones.
