Description

This is a late 18th and early 19th century walled garden with a two-storey gardener’s house incorporated into the west end of the north wall. The garden and house are constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings.

The walled garden comprises high walls which enclose a large, quadrangular area. It has long, angled walls resembling buttresses at the corners, a wide opening in the south wall, and the north wall sweeps upwards. A derelict glasshouse range runs the full length of the gardener's house.

The gardener's house has a rectangular plan, with the end walls slightly projecting from the main north elevation. The west wall is taller than the east, creating a downward slope to the roof. The north elevation features openings staggered upwards along the slope, but arranged symmetrically. It has two inner and two outer doorways (two of which are blocked), and two ground-floor windows. The first floor has three windows, with the outer two enlarged in the late 19th century. Chimney stacks rise above the garden wall. The roof is hipped and covered in slate.

A semi-domed alcove, built of red ashlar with some nearby rustic stonework, is situated to the south of the walled garden. The gardener's house is included in the listing because it is physically linked to the garden wall. Other sheds and outbuildings near the house are not included in the listing.
