Description

This is a late 18th and early 19th century walled garden with a two-storey gardener’s house integrated into the west end of the north wall. The garden and house are constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings.

The walled garden comprises high walls defining a large, rectangular area. The walls have long, angled buttresses at the corners, a wide gap in the south wall, and sweep upwards towards the north. A derelict range of glasshouses runs along the length of the gardener’s house.

The gardener’s house has a rectangular plan, although the end walls slightly project from the main north elevation; the west wall is taller than the rest, resulting in a downward slope to the roof towards the east. The north elevation has openings arranged symmetrically, following the slope of the ground. There are two inner and two outer doorways at ground level, with two doorways blocked, and two windows. The first floor has three windows, with the two outer windows enlarged in the late 19th century. Chimneys rise above the garden wall. The roof is hipped and covered in slate.

A semi-domed alcove, built from red ashlar with some rustic stonework nearby, is situated to the south of the walled garden.

The gardener’s house is included in the listing due to its physical connection to the garden wall. Other sheds and outbuildings located near the house are not included.
