Description

Probably dating to the earlier 19th century, this ice house was an important part of the Craigielands House estate. It comprises a barrel-vaulted, rectangular chamber constructed of stone, with the soil above covered in vegetation. The ice house served to preserve food supplies by storing ice cut during winter months, keeping the chamber cool throughout the summer. The structure is referenced on the first edition Ordnance Survey Map from 1854-8. It is now owned by Forestry Commission Scotland.
