Description

Old Bank House, located at 16 Bruce Street in Lochmaben, dates back to 1786, as indicated by the date on the kitchen fireplace lintel, but it likely incorporates earlier elements. This is a three-bay house with a single-storey street elevation, featuring classical details and set back from the roadway, with an off-set over a basement. The building is constructed of painted ashlar on the flanks and rubble-built on the garden front.

The street elevation features giant stylised Corinthian pilasters with thistle detail flanking the bays. The openings are set in lugged cavetto architraves, and there is a short flight of steps leading to the central door, which has glazed upper panels and a rectangular fanlight. A continuous frieze and cornice run along the top, and there are coped end stacks with a modern tile roof. The gables have pointed attic openings. On the garden front, the central bay includes a basement door beneath a finely-executed Venetian window, flanked by giant Corinthian pilasters, and features a canted dormer. The outer bays have margined ground floor windows.

The interior was altered when the building became a bank in 1847. The central entrance hall was transformed into a public area, with a banking room on the left. The stair was rebuilt against the right gable and is now sealed off from the hall by a doorway, with changes made to the fenestration on the gable. The principal rooms retain good decorative detailing.

The house is set behind a low coped wall with rusticated ashlar gatepiers, although the iron railings have been removed. There is a large quadrangular garden to the south, enclosed by tall ashlar-coped rubble-built walls. To the right, there is a recessed low wing that appears to date from the late 18th or early 19th century, originally serving as a coach-house or stables, but now contains a domestic flat and incorporates early walling at low level leading to the garden.
