Description
Auldgirth Bridge is a road bridge completed in 1782, designed by architect David Henderson of Edinburgh. It features three segmental arches spanning the River Nith and showcases a classical style. The bridge is constructed of red sandstone ashlar and has bull-faced piers with pointed cutwaters on either side. Above the arches, paired pilasters are present, and entablatures, which are linked by a coped parapet, contain alcoved pedestrian refuges. The curved tops of these refuges resemble domes over the entablatures. The bridge also has curved approaches and a horizontal roadway.
