Description
The stables, dated 1778 as indicated by a bronze pennon, form the main east range of a courtyard arrangement. They are accompanied by a pyramidal-roofed, three-stage square dovecot tower and low, single-storey, asymmetrical flanking wings. The stables are built of rubble with ashlar dressings, all presently whitewashed. The dovecot tower features a pedestrian pend, round-arched on its east side, with a band above corresponding to the eaves level of the wings. The upper stage of the tower has two small square openings, seemingly flight holes, and a single window on each face; the octagonal window on the east side resembles the loft windows seen on the south wing's four-bay east elevation. The south wing itself features a round-headed door and square-headed windows at ground level. The north wing has been altered and is now a cottage. The building has small axial stacks and slate roofs, with a swept-roofed ventilator over the tower.
Inside, the dovecot is intact, retaining its stone and brick nesting boxes and a potence. The south wing contains an arched passageway at its east side, with arched recesses leading off. The interior of the north and west ranges are not included in the listing. The pennon displays the initials of William Copeland of Colliston. The building has unfortunately undergone recent, unsatisfactory alterations to its window openings.
