Walled Garden House, Blackwood House

The Walled Gardens at Blackwood House date from the mid to late 18th century and consist of an exceptionally large quadrangular enclosure, which may have formerly been an orchard. At the northeast corner, there is a two-storey house with twin gables. Adjoining the high north wall of the garden is a long row of five single-storey lean-to cottages that face north, some of which have openings into the garden, and all feature attics beneath a continuous lean-to roof.

The buildings are constructed from rubble and are whitewashed, with the garden range of the house being pebble-dashed. The house, which has been altered and re-windowed, displays a four-bay north elevation with a wide inner gable that is advanced, and it has stacks located in the roof valley. The cottages have a battered north wall, boarded doors, and small-paned glazing. All roofs are slated. The garden walls feature red ashlar coping, and the east wall sweeps down and turns inward at the center. The west side of the garden, adjacent to the River Nith, is largely unwalled.
