Description

The building comprises a house, a schoolhouse, a school, and a hall, constructed in 1843, with later alterations and additions around 1907. The freestanding hall is located to the east, while a lower single-story school, which was converted to domestic use in 1975, adjoins the north side of the house. A single-story hall containing an additional classroom is situated to the southeast.

The schoolhouse and school are built of painted rubble with projecting cills. The house has mainly four-pane glazing in sash and case windows, while the school has smaller panes. The rooflines feature red sandstone ashlar coped skews and beak skewputts. Gablehead stacks are of painted rubble to the north of the school and ashlar banded to the east and west of the house. The roof pitches have graded grey slates on the north side of the house, purple slates on the south side, and small grey slates on the school roof. Octagonal cans top the chimneys.

The east elevation of the house has a window at ground and first floors to the right. The south elevation is three-bay, with a gabled bay projecting to the left. This bay features a bipartite window at ground floor level and a window at first floor level, topped with an ashlar spike finial. A window is located at ground floor level in the bay to the right, with a gabled dormerhead above the first-floor window. A later painted brick gabled bay is further advanced at the centre, with a window at ground and first floors; it formerly had a door to the east return. The west elevation of the house features a window at ground and first floors to the left. The north elevation has the school adjoined to the right of centre, and a porch to the left. A door is located to the outer right.

The school’s east (entrance) elevation features a gabled stone porch in a re-entrant angle with the house. The porch has a deeply-set round-arched door to the east and an ashlar shield in the gablehead, inscribed "Larbrax School 1843." A diamond-paned window is set into the north return, and an ashlar spike finial tops the gable. Two windows flank the centre. The west elevation of the school has three windows, and the north elevation is blank.

The hall is harled with concrete tabbed margins and overhanging eaves. It has eight-pane glazing in sash and case windows and a harled corniced gablehead stack to the north, topped with an octagonal can. The roof is covered in small grey slates. The north elevation has a window to the left and a door on the north return of the porch to the outer left. The east elevation features a gabled porch with a window to the east and a lean-to with a corrugated metal roof adjoined to the remainder of the elevation to the left. The south elevation has three tall windows, and the west elevation has a single window to the outer left.

A water pump is located in the yard, and a painted brick former pony shed stands to the southwest.
