Description

The Castle Daly Hotel at Auchenmalg is an 1858 building, originally a school and adjoining schoolhouse, forming an L-shaped layout when viewed from the rear. It is constructed of painted rubble with painted raised margins and projecting eaves, and features timber finials to the gableheads.

The west elevation is asymmetrical, with four bays; the house occupies the left three bays, and the school’s gabled elevation is to the right. A gabled bay projects to the left, featuring windows on both the ground and first floors. Another gabled bay, slightly more advanced, is positioned to the left of the centre, with a fanlit door and window on the ground floor, and a window above. A further bay to the right of the centre has a ground-floor window and a dormer-headed window on the first floor. The school's broad gabled elevation extends to the right, incorporating a window to the left, a half-piended porch to the right with steps and a window to its west return, and two blind slits in the gablehead. A red sandstone panel in the apex displays "AD1858" inscribed within a moulded oval. A rubble wall adjoins the porch to the left.

The south elevation has five bays arranged as 1-1-3, with a gabled painted brick porch in the bay to the right of the centre. Steps lead to a door on the west return, and a bipartite window is situated to the south, while a window faces east. Windows are present in the remaining bays. Tall, shouldered wallhead stacks, incorporating slightly set-off flues, are positioned between the centre bays, the bay to the left of the centre, and the outer left bay.

The east elevation presents the gabled elevation of the school on the left, with a window to the right and two cellar doors at basement level. A window is situated to the left, and a small window faces north. A cat-slide extension extends from the left and centre bays of the house. A door and two windows face east, while a window, formerly a door, is visible to the north return. A window is positioned on both the ground and first floors of the bay to the right.

The north elevation is defined by a slightly advanced gable, which lies to the left of the advanced bay on the west side. It is blank.

Most windows are fitted with four panes within sash and case frames, although some have eight panes. Modern glazing is also present. Granite stacks are located on the house, at the north gable, and along the ridge between the house and school; red sandstone ashlar stacks are on the school’s gablehead to the east and two wallhead stacks to the south (rendered). The roof is covered with small slates and topped with octagonal cans.

A low rubble boundary wall runs along the west side. Two pyramidal-capped square piers mark the schoolhouse boundary.
