Description

Gillespie is an earlier to mid 19th century farmhouse and steading. The farmhouse is two storeys with an attic and has three bays, along with a lower gabled wing to the west. It is constructed of painted rubble with painted raised margins.

The east elevation, which is the principal facade, features a corniced margin around the central door, which is boarded and has a fanlight above it. The windows are regularly spaced on both the ground and first floors, with taller windows on the ground floor. Above the outer bays, there are canted and piended dormer windows.

On the south elevation, there is a window to the left and right on the ground floor, and a bipartite window to the left on the first floor. The wing to the left is recessed, with a window on the left at the first floor and bipartite windows on both the left and right at the ground floor, as well as to the right at the first floor.

The west elevation has a window on the ground and first floors to the left. The central gabled bay is advanced and features a door and two windows on the ground floor, along with three windows on the first floor to the north return. There is a gabled wing attached to the right, which is blank to the west, and a lean-to to the north in the re-entrant angle with the central gabled bay. A screen wall to the northwest links the rear wing with a gabled building to the north.

The north elevation is gabled and blank. The windows are fitted with 4-pane glazing in sash and case style, with some modern glazing in the rear wing. The building has coped skews and banded painted rubble stacks, with gablehead stacks to the north and south and a ridge stack at the centre of the rear wing. The roof is covered with graded purple-grey slates and features octagonal cans.

The steading is located to the north of the farmhouse and consists of two parallel ranges of buildings running north-south. These buildings include various styles, some gabled and some piended, all made of painted rubble and small grey slates. The byre range to the west has a piend roof, while the barn to the southeast has a double-piend roof. There is also a circular horse mill situated between a building to the east and the adjoining barn to the west. This mill has a central timber pier supported by brick columns, although the gearing has been removed. It is topped with a conical slate roof featuring a ball finial.
