Description
Chipperkyle House is a 2-story and basement house, likely built around 1810-15 for Lt Col Alexander Maitland. It is a square-plan building constructed of rendered rubble with painted raised sandstone margins, a basecourse, and quoins.
The south-facing entrance elevation is symmetrical, with three bays. A gabled porch with moulded eaves is accessed by steps. The main doorway is a depressed-arch tripartite design with a fanlight and side-lights, leading to double-leaf panelled doors. The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, with a tripartite window with timber mullions above the porch. A moulded eaves cornice and a prominent stack with a semi-circular window are visible on the wallhead.
The side elevations are similarly detailed. A single-story, gabled bay was added to the east side in the later 19th century. The roof is slate, with bold wallhead stacks. The rear elevation features single-story ranges at basement level that form a kitchen court, accessible through a depressed-arch pend.
The interior is simply detailed, with plain timber stair balusters and good timber doorcases.
The house is part of a group with the adjacent Chipperkyle Stables and Dovecot.
