Description
The Martyrs' Monument stands on the summit of a hillock in Kirkpatrick Irongray. The original monument, erected in 1685, is a flat slab memorial, featuring an upright panel topped with an urn finial and acroteria. In 1851, the monument was enclosed by plain iron railings set upon a red ashlar coping. Obelisk piers mark the angles of the railings. Both the original monument and the later railings are inscribed. A commemorative service was held on 27th July 1851 to mark the enclosure. The monument has been documented in the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland inventory of 1914 (no. 327), the New Statistical Account, and in a local guide dating from around 1900, which includes a photograph.
