Description
Irongray Bridge is a road bridge built in 1855, spanning Cluden Water. The bridge features two segmental arches constructed from bullfaced red ashlar. It has pointed cutwaters on either side and channelled voussoirs, with outer pilaster strips and a band below coped parapets that are curved at the approaches. The roadway is flat. The bridge is also situated within the parish of Holywood.
Historical records, including drawings from the Scottish Record Office (SRO) of a proposed bridge at Gribton from 1824, and plans for a proposed suspension bridge by Walter Newall (recorded as RHP 35863), indicate earlier considerations for crossing the water. An alternative design in stone, by an architect named Seggie, is documented in RHP 35864.
