Description
The Hoddom Parish Church and Churchyard comprise a roofless shell of a T-plan Gothic church, built in 1817 by John Park, a mason. The church is situated within an enclosure defined by the churchyard.
The church itself is constructed of rubble stone with stugged and graded pink quoins. Polished red ashlar is used for roll-mouldings, hoodmolds, Y-tracery, and spiky pinnacles. There are three porches; the main porch is located in the re-entrant angle, while the porches along the long south wall have a crow-stepped design, and their original status is uncertain. The jamb is also crow-stepped, featuring a tall, formerly louvred birdcage belfry.
The churchyard is enclosed by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping. A gate to the north is flanked by square gatepiers. The churchyard contains 18th and 19th century stone monuments, along with three rectangular burial enclosures. Indications of rebuilt walling suggest that earlier 17th and 18th century enclosures, located to the south of the present church, were built as aisles adjoining a previous church; these are also rectangular-plan and rubble-built with ashlar dressings. One 17th century enclosure features engaged circular shafts. The site was burned out on the night of February 2nd-3rd, 1975.
The present parish of Hoddom was formed in 1609, with this site chosen for the church. The church is no longer in ecclesiastical use.
