Description
Brooklands is an early 19th century house, extended in the late 19th century to double its original size with a rear wing. The original house is constructed of rubble with red sandstone window margins and rusticated quoins on the centre bay, which is slightly advanced. A boldly projecting, corniced single-storey porch was added in the late 19th century, featuring a fluted Doric portico. The porch provides access to double-leaf panelled doors with egg and dart moulding. Ground floor windows are tripartite with cornices, although they were enlarged in the late 19th century. First floor windows are single-light and have raised margins. All windows are sash and case, with small panes in the upper sashes and plate glass in the lower sashes.
The east elevation combines an early 19th century two-bay section with a later 19th century wing that has a two-storey canted window to the right. To the left of the wing, steps lead to a double-leaf, partially glazed door topped with a large astragalled fanlight, and a bracketted projecting porch/lintel. An eaves cornice runs throughout the building, and a blocking course is present on the north wing. The roofs are piended and slate covered, with corniced axial stacks and octagonal cans.
Inside, a good cantilevered staircase features decorative cast-iron balusters with bas-relief medallions. There is also good cornice work throughout, particularly in the drawing room, which is decorated with a cherubic processional frieze. Original shutters and panelled doors remain in place.
A large walled garden lies to the northeast. The garden is enclosed by a rubble wall, partly brick-lined and topped with flat sandstone coping. In the centre stands a lectern sundial with a metal dial and gnomon on a sandstone pedestal. Brooklands is part of a group that includes Brooklands Lodge and ornamental walling.
