Description
The Toll Cottage is a single-storey toll-house built in 1834 by A-Halliday, an architect from Dumfries. It is constructed of painted rubble with painted sandstone margins. The front elevation is symmetrical, with three bays, and features a projecting central entrance bay with a five-sided design. The windows are 4-pane sash windows with a case design. The roof is slate, with a piended shape, and features timber bracketed eaves. A distinctive feature is the group of four tall, square sandstone chimney cans. The rear elevation has some modern additions. A lean-to brick extension is attached to the right flank. The design was executed as shown in Historic Environment Scotland records, except for the missing window hoodmoulds.
