Description
The lodge, built around 1820 to 1830, takes its design from the "Gothic Cottage" model illustrated in John Papworth’s Rural Residences of 1818, although the actual building has simpler detailing. It comprises a three-story square tower with projecting angle buttresses and a single-story wing with an attic to the north. The tower is constructed of rubble with sandstone margins, with parts of the wall harled. The wing is of rubble construction. Windows are generally small, with many being four-pane, sash-and-case windows; some are six-pane casements. The second floor features recessed crosses on three sides of the tower.
The tower has stepped, angled buttresses of sandstone, rising to decorative pinnacles. The building has small, brick stacks that are not original. The tower is topped with a pyramidal slate roof, while the wing has a pitched roof.
The lodge is listed together with the ornamental walling opposite it and forms a group with Brooklands House and the ornamental walling. It is said that during the 19th century the building was used as a hostel or school for ten boys.
