Description

This is an early 19th century house with a later 19th century rear wing that effectively doubled the size of the original structure. The house is constructed of rubble stone with red sandstone window margins and rusticated quoins on the centre bay which is slightly advanced. A boldly projecting, single-storey porch was added in the late 19th century; it features a square corniced design and a fluted Doric portico. The porch contains double-leaf, panelled doors with egg and dart moulding. The ground floor windows are tripartite with cornices, although they were enlarged in the late 19th century. The first-floor windows are single-light with raised margins. All windows are sash and case, with small panes in the upper sashes and plate glass in the lower sashes.

The east elevation presents a two-bay section from the early 19th century alongside a later 19th-century wing featuring a two-storey canted window to the right. Steps lead to a double-leaf, partially glazed door at the left, which is topped by a large astragalled fanlight and a bracketted projecting lintel. There is an eaves cornice throughout the building, with a blocking course to the north wing. The roofs are piended and covered in slate, with corniced axial stacks topped with octagonal cans.

The interior includes a good cantilevered staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters featuring bas-relief medallions. Fine cornice work is present throughout, particularly in the drawing room which has a cherubic processional frieze. Original shutters and panelled doors are retained.

A large walled garden is located to the northeast of the house. The garden’s walls are constructed of rubble stone, partially brick-lined, and have flat sandstone coping. A lectern-type sundial stands at the centre, featuring a metal dial and gnomon on a sandstone pedestal. The property forms a group with Brooklands Lodge and ornamental walling.
