Description
Langholm Lodge comprises two houses designed by James Playfair in 1786/7, originally built as flanking wings to a larger Langholm Lodge. The central block of the original lodge was rebuilt after a fire around 1788 and subsequently demolished in 1953, leaving these two wings as the sole surviving elements. Both have a symmetrical, seven-bay south elevation, with the three central bays slightly projecting. The walls are of stugged grey stone courses, with polished margins; the remaining elevations are mostly harled. The windows are small, mostly 12-pane sashes, with an eaves course and piended slate roofs.
The east wing is arranged as a two-storey, three-bay house with single-storey flanking wings. The central entrance is glazed, and the first-floor windows have a six-pane glazing pattern. There are stacks on ramped plinths at each end. A rear L-plan range, featuring two-bay coach house openings facing east, creates an open courtyard.
The west wing has a south elevation with all bays two storeys high, and all windows are 12-pane sashes. A rear wing at the re-entrant angle incorporates three doors, and a single-storey, piended projection extends from the west wall. Stacks are symmetrically placed.
The houses were built for the Duke of Buccleuch. Plans for the central block of Langholm Lodge, including a document with an 1828 watermark (likely referencing alterations then), are held at the Scottish Record Office (RHP 9686). Original drawings by Playfair, dated 1786-7, are held by Historic Environment Scotland.
