Description

This is an ornamental cast-iron footbridge, designed by William Keir, Junior of Buccleuch Estates and cast in Workington. It was erected in Autumn 1813 within the grounds of Langholm Lodge for the Duke of Buccleuch. The bridge comprises a single segmental arch formed by lattice girders, with shallow spandrels at either end. It is supported by bull-faced ashlar abutments featuring angled springers. The parapets are simple, with balusters, and splayed outwards towards the approaches. It is likely the earliest existing iron bridge in Scotland.
