Description
The stables at Orchardton House date from the mid-19th century and consist of partially unroofed single and two-storey ranges of rubble buildings arranged around a rectangular courtyard. The buildings serve a dual purpose, being partly domestic and partly for stabling and coach houses, with hay lofts above. The walls are made of rubble, with some sections rendered, and feature red sandstone at the angles and around the window margins. The windows are single light sash and case, with surviving glazing consisting of 12 panes.
A notable feature is the two-storey square dovecot tower, which has a consoled corniced doorpiece at the ground level and a deep projecting cornice or rat course above the first floor. The tower also includes red sandstone panels and three layers of flight holes on the second floor. The structure is topped with a pyramidal slate roof and has a deep eaves cornice.
