Description

11 Main Street in Auchencairn is a pair of late 18th century houses, one 2-storey and the other 3-storey, both with a rectangular plan. They were converted into an inn and public house in the 19th century and are located along a main road in the village. A 20th century flat roof extension at the rear of 13 Main Street is not included in the listing.

The front elevation facing the road is 2 storeys high, featuring a central door for each house, flanked by symmetrically arranged windows. The west house is finished in rendered stone, while the east house is made of painted stone rubble. Both have painted margins around the doors and projecting sills.

The rear elevation of the east house rises to 3 storeys, with the land sloping down to a basement that has three access doors. The window openings at the rear of both houses are arranged irregularly.

The buildings mainly feature 12-pane and plate glass in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has two granite chimneystacks on the gables, along with a central ridge stack where the two houses meet, all topped with circular cans.

The interior, as observed in 2016, retains some features typical of its late 18th century origin, including basement steps, window shutters, a dog-leg staircase in the west property, and moulded timber architraves and cornicing in the east property. The two houses are connected internally at both the ground and first floors.
