Description

Newlands is a large Scottish Baronial mansion completed in 1911, built incorporating a mid-19th century two-story, three-bay house. The building is two to three stories high, with basements and attics. A square tower rises two stages above the main roofline. The design is asymmetrical, featuring strings, corbelled and crenellated parapets, bartizans with spouts, a square tower with a cap house, and crow-stepped gables. Windows are single, bipartite, or canted, and there are coped or castellated stacks. The exterior is constructed with snecked red ashlar, with polished dressings.

The south elevation features a large, castellated porch with a columned doorpiece added centrally to the original house. Flanking ground floor windows are canted. A smaller, full-height wing is recessed to the right, and a tall “L-plan towerhouse” is advanced to the left, with a two-story canted window and a large corbelled bartizan. A modern fire escape is visible at the north gable. A north wing extends from the rear of the original house and has a canted entrance bay to the west, with a steep-pitched, facetted roof. Slate roofs are present throughout.

Inscribed stones built into the walls commemorate the building’s association with Norwegian servicemen who were billeted here between 1940 and 1945.
