Description
Dated 1878, Duncow Stables are a single-storey complex of former stables built around a rectangular courtyard. The east elevation is symmetrical and five bays wide, with the central and outer bays slightly advanced. Openings are all set within 2-centred arches. The construction is primarily snecked bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings, although the majority of the building is rubble-built. A two-storey square tower is centrally positioned, featuring a pend (archway) and a string course that runs at the main eaves level, raised above the datestone. Above the datestone is a single transomed and hood-moulded light, topped by a finialed pyramidal roof with projecting eaves. Wall-head diamond stacks rise from projecting bases on either flank. Bipartite windows are to the flanking bays, while the piended outer bays have hood-moulded transomed tripartites with blind lower lights. An eaves band runs around the building; the roofs are slate-covered with red ridging tiles and finials. Smaller tripartites are visible on the flanks. Lower ranges extend towards the west, with a later range in domestic use.
Within the courtyard, the east range is constructed of brick, featuring a roof that sweeps down over a verandah supported by cast-iron columns. There is a gabled loft opening above the pend. Inserted garage openings are present on the north range. Slit ventilators are located on the south range. To the west are two small, rectangular sheds, formerly used as kennels. These are rubble-built with bull-faced red ashlar quoins and eaves bands, a door on the short east wall, and piended slate roofs with axial ventilators, red ridging tiles and finials. Roof vents were removed around 1980. Duncow House, the original associated residence, has now been demolished.
