Description
South Lodge, part of Duncow House, was probably built around 1878. It is a single-story building with an attic, designed in an L-shape and incorporating Jacobean architectural details. The lodge is constructed from rough-cut red sandstone ashlar with smoother, polished dressings. It features a canted (angled) ground floor window and a single window in the north and west gable roofs. A wide eaves band is built into the roofline to resemble a parapet; a gabled porch with a decorative rope-moulded entrance is set into the angle between the north-facing walls. All main gables are topped with decorative finials and shaped crow-steps. A dormer window is present on the north wall. The building has chimney stacks with curved tops and a slate roof.
The entrance is marked by square, red ashlar gate piers with pyramidal caps. Decorative cast-iron gates and railings are also present, along with curved low walls; the wall to the south is taller and includes two blind slits (decorative, non-opening windows). Both the lodge and gate piers are inscribed with the letters 'CJ' (or possibly 'JC'). The nearby stables are dated 1878, suggesting the lodge was built around the same time.
