Description
The remains of a late 17th or early 18th century tower windmill stand as a roofless, four-storey, battered circular shell. The structure is built of rubble with red ashlar dressings. The original south-facing door has been blocked. A door facing north was added in the mid to later 19th century, and all other openings at each level are also blocked. The original flooring has been removed. The windmill was described as ruins on the first Ordnance Survey map of 1855; the north door may have been introduced shortly afterwards during a restoration. Further information, including plans and elevations, can be found in John Hume’s Industrial Archaeology (vol 1, 1976, p102) and Scottish Windmills by Douglas, Oglethorpe & Hume (1984, p.29 and appendix).
