Description
Riddingwood House is an early 19th-century mansion house designed by Walter Newall of Dumfries. It is a two-storey building with two symmetrical frontages. The exterior is constructed of rough, superimposed stone courses with ashlar dressings and window architraves, all painted.
The west elevation has three bays and features a central panelled front door with a pedimented surround. Ground floor windows are sash windows with 12 panes per sash and have apron panels and console cornices. The south elevation, which may have been altered, has five bays; the two right-hand bays are possibly later additions. The ground floor openings are corniced, and the inner bay is slightly advanced with a canted ground floor window containing a central French window. Other ground-floor windows have been lowered to the base course, with the apron panels removed. There is an eaves course and cornice, as well as axial stacks where flues rise from the kitchen on the east wall, which faces south. A two-storey rear wing is located beside a stair window with mullions and a transom.
Illustrations published by Loudon in his 1839 Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture differ from the current appearance of the house, especially on the south elevation, which is depicted as having only three bays. This suggests that the two easternmost bays of the south elevation may not be original.
