Description

Amisfield Tower is a significant building that likely dates back to around 1600, following a remodeling of an existing tower house from the 16th century. It has a rectangular plan and stands four storeys tall, with attics and garrets above. The structure is built from rubble, featuring red ashlar dressings.

At the southeast angle, there is a circular stair turret that is corbelled above ground level. This turret leads to a three-storey gabled tower, which has a rope-moulded apex stack and skews, with dormers on the flanks. At the top, there is a gabled rectangular cap house that sits astride the gable head. The building also includes ashlar-built two-storey turrets that are corbelled over the remaining angles and topped with curved semi-conical roofs.

The south wall features a roll-moulded off-centre door, and the windows above it have nail-head decoration. The second-floor window is flanked by plaques, and there is a single corbelled dormer with decorative jambs and a shaped gable head. The eaves are chequer-corbelled, and all larger openings below have relieving arches. The tower includes gunports and has a crow-stepped west gable with hollowed steps and an apex stack with rope moulding. The roofs are slated.

Inside, there is a guard room or similar space and a vaulted chamber with a cobbled floor at ground level. Above, there are L-shaped chambers designed to accommodate the stair. The first and second-floor chambers feature a fireplace with shafted jambs on the west wall, a stone-flagged floor in the former, and an original painted frieze in the latter. The ceiling joists are supported on stone corbels, while the attic and garrets are no longer floored.

Amisfield Tower is incorporated into the southwest angle of a walled garden, which is listed separately.
