Description
Glenae House is a two-storey, five-bay Classical house designed by architect Thomas Boyd of Dumfries, with a contract dating from 1789. The house features single-storey flanking wings, all set on a raised basement. It underwent alterations by Barbour and Bowie around 1911. The exterior is constructed from droved red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings.
On the south elevation, there are steps leading up to an Ionic-columned portico with a pediment, which frames a depressed-arched doorway. The doorway has a panelled door topped with a fanlight. The windows are sash style, originally with 12 panes, although the lower sashes on the ground floor have been altered to 2 panes. The front elevation includes blind boxes for the windows. Architectural details include a base course, eaves course, cornice, blocking course, and corniced end stacks with stone flues. The piended wings each have two bays, with the end elevations featuring three bays. The outer bays are advanced, and the left wing has a blind tripartite design. The right wing has been altered with a linking bay added or rebuilt around 1910. All roofs are slated.
Inside, Glenae House showcases several fine Classical features, including friezes, cornices, and decorative plasterwork on the ceilings. There are also chimney pieces and panelled doors set in architraves. A cantilevered stair with simple wrought-iron work leads to a pilastered screen in the hall, which is adorned with acanthus leaf capitals. The south-facing ground floor rooms are particularly decorative, with an arched recess in the sitting room featuring elaborate pilasters and a guilloche pattern on the intrados.
The property is also marked by two square, channelled (painted) ashlar gatepiers that are corniced and topped with raised and curved caps.
