Description

Burns Hermitage, located in Friar's Carse, is a small, single-storey structure with a rectangular plan and gabled roof, dating from 1874, which is a restoration and re-facing of a hermitage originally built around 1790. The building is constructed of red sandstone rubble with polished dressings and features roll-moulded openings. The south wall has a door and a bipartite window, while the east gable has a single narrow window, all of which are shouldered lights with splayed cills. The gable has crow steps, and the south wall displays skewputts adorned with masonic motifs, one of which is uncarved. The structure has a small apex stack and is topped with a slate roof.

Inside, there is a segmental-arched fireplace on the west gable, with a corbel set in the wall above that bears a heraldic device. The hermitage is enclosed by plain cast-iron railings.
