Description
The South East Range of the Stables at Friars Carse dates mostly from the early 19th century, but the principal southeast range was remodeled around 1873, coinciding with the enlargement of the main house. This stable complex consists of four single-storey ranges arranged around a quadrangular courtyard, with a central pend located in the main range and another at the east end of the opposite range. The former has a segmental-arched opening at the base of the tower, while the latter features a round-arched entrance beneath a gabled dovecot.
The tower and southeast elevation are constructed from bullfaced red ashlar, while the rest of the building is made of rubble with ashlar dressings. The tower includes a rectangular opening in its tall lower stage, and the offset upper stage has blind narrow openings on its elevations, topped with a piended roof that has stone-bracketted eaves. The southeast elevation is roughly symmetrical and features seven bays (excluding an additional bay to the right), with the outer bays showcasing segmental-headed bipartite windows and bargeboarded jerkin roofs. A cottage is located to the right, which has a door and an additional bipartite window.
The northwest range includes slit ventilators and a square-headed cartway on its outer face. The dovecot, positioned astride the roof, has slated flanks and a gabled apex ventilator with flight-holes on the southwest gable. There is also a cartshed or garage in the northeast range. All roofs are covered with graded slates, and the courtyard is cobbled.
