Description

Ellisland Farm was built in 1788 for Robert Burns. It is a single-storey farmhouse with a steading, constructed of painted rubble with dressings, and features painted margins. The west elevation of the house has three bays, with a central door that has been converted into a window, and an additional blank bay on the right, which may be an early 19th-century addition. The house includes 4-pane sash windows and corniced end stacks, with a door located in the re-entrant angle of the rear (east) wing. The roofs are covered with slate, with graded slates over the rear wing.

To the west, there are two parallel steading ranges. The north range has lofts at the west end, two lintelled cart openings leading to the courtyard, and a loft door flanked by small square openings above. The plain south range and a nearby range are set at right angles, both featuring roof vents.

Additionally, there is a pyramidal-roofed single-storey square shed located to the northeast, set on a slope above the river bank. This shed has a door facing west, two windows, and two basement doors facing south. To the south of the house, there is a walled orchard.
