Description

The Hermitage is a house dating to the late 18th century, with alterations in the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with slate roofs and six brick gable stacks. The house has a double-range plan.

The south front is colourwashed, and features a central two-storey porch with a pair of half-glazed margin light doors and single round-headed side lights. Flanking the porch are single square bay windows, each with a pair of French windows and overlights. Above the porch, a round-headed Y-tracery sash window has side lights. Either side of this are single two-light casement windows with unusual margin light glazing. A set-back side wing has 20th-century windows and an attached lean-to conservatory; above it are two round-headed Y-tracery sashes.

Attached to the north-east corner is a 3-metre-high rubble stone wall, with a four-panel door within a wooden, pedimented surround. To the left of this door is a two-panel door within a similar wooden, pedimented surround, complete with scroll brackets. The wall extends 20 metres south, with pantile coping, then incorporates a pair of brick gate piers supporting iron spearhead gates. A 2-metre-high wall extends for 17 metres further south.
