Description

The Ukrainian Chapel and War Memorial at Hallmuir Prisoner of War Camp in Lockerbie was built in 1942. It is a single-storey structure with a pitched roof, designed as a chapel for Ukrainian prisoners of war. The building features painted corrugated asbestos on a timber frame and a concrete base. There is a timber door on the north side, flanked by windows, and two windows on both the east and west elevations, consisting of 4- and 6-pane timber windows. The roof is also made of corrugated asbestos.

Inside, the chapel has six bays supported by simple kingposted roof trusses. At the south end, there is a timber partition that forms an altar-screen, with a round-arched opening leading to the High Altar and square-headed openings on the sides. The interior includes timber pews, altars, a lectern, and other furnishings, with the ceiling painted blue and adorned with gold stars.

At the entrance, there is a memorial consisting of a timber post on a concrete base, which bears a plastic plaque inscribed in both Ukrainian and English. The plaque reads, "This chapel was created by Ukrainian POWs during their internment here after World War 2."
